5.1.2009

Kenny makes it back to Japan by early May, though he only stays for two weeks. VERY PACKED schedule for him as well, and not just with DDT – he also makes appearances in Ice Ribbon and Hard Hit Progress. Apparently he had to quarantine for 3 hours upon entry to Japan.

May 2: K-DOJO GWSP6 2009. Kenny joins tag team Handsome against Omega and Hate. (Yes, there’s a tag team with his name.) Not a ton of photos of Kenny’s involvement in this show, but there is a really nice pic of him from either before or after the show.

May 3: The Golden Lovers hop a train together to get to Nagoya for their first tag match of the month at Sportiva Ai Wrestling Expo 2009. How happy they look to be together again! Kenny always seems more at home in Japan.

Here’s some pics from the show:

Ibushi and Makoto after Max Bump

DDT Max Bump was May 4. The Golden Lovers took on Yoshihiko and Danshoku Dino. In this match, Yoshihiko dies multiple times, one time even being resurrected as the American Badass, but alas, Yoshihiko does die a more permanent death at the end of the show by being ultimately assassinated by the Italian Army. Kenny declares he will avenge Yoshihiko, and the Golden Lovers send the remainder of the doll’s stuffing brains off with a heartfelt hadouken.

….and here’s a bunch of gifs of grown ass men selling the shit out of a blow up doll’s wrestling moves.

Lovers having perfectly synchronous timing, then being affectionate:

Both men were in another match that same day, though not together. I can’t decipher what the match was about from translations from Japanese. It might have been a tournament of some kind, though a bizarre one from the pictures. See if you can figure it out for yourself HERE. All I know is a hadouken happened, then Ibushi came out and gave a bunch of kicks to people, and then “leaves calmly.”

May 5: Ibushi goes to NJPW’s Divergence show with Takeshi Morishima as a tag partner. They wrestle Ibushi’s future boyfriend Tanahashi, of all people, and his tag partner Koji Kanemoto, and actually defeat them!

Takeshi Morishima and Ibushi

After the match is over, Ibushi tells the audience his name, and announces he would like to participate in the Best of the Super Juniors tournament.

May 6: Yusuke Inokuma & Omega wrestle as ‘anonymous’ Gaijins. It is announced prior to the match that the two men can’t participate (as themselves) due to “burns, mouth ulcers, caused by accidents during practice and muscle fatigue…..serious illnesses such as conjunctivitis, mouth ulcer, stiff shoulders, low back pain, metabolic syndrome, and homesickness.” Instead we get some Gaijins. Lots of fuckery in this match that is rather difficult to decipher when translating to English, but there’s something about using cellophane wrap as a weapon and referee Matsui getting involved…

Kenny wraps his face up in a way that makes me question how he breathed throughout the match, yells evil Gaijin things like ‘fuckin Jap!’, and ultimately wins for his team, then happy dances out of the ring. I heavily encourage anyone who wants to take a stab at deciphering this match more thoroughly for themselves to do so HERE.

In true obsessive workaholic style, Kenny had a second match that same day, this time a one-on-one against HARASHIMA at Hard Hit Progress. Ibushi comes out with him initially, I assume just for Lover solidarity, because he has his own singles match later.

Ibushi participates in a boxing match against Akihiko Mori at Hard Hit Progress. He wins, thanks Mori for the opportunity, and states he would love to do it again.

Kenny stops by Midbreath Gym to work out on May 7 and poses with Taiji Ishimori from Pro-Wrestling Noah, who was also at the gym.

May 9: Kenny pairs up with Riho for an Ice Ribbon show! Someone posted photos from the show on twitter. Not every mid-20s wrestler would bother to do an un-macho, fun, cute thing such as this. #fascinating

May 10: The Golden Lovers had managed to hang onto their tag titles for 106 days up to this point, but lose them to  Francis Togo & PIZA Michinoku at Wrestling Tonkotsu 2009. I unfortunately can’t find this match anywhere. Maybe it’ll turn up at some point.

The Lovers pose for a samurai themed poster on May 13:

Then later that evening, Dropkick bar had a party that was “Kenny Omega Night.” Nakazawa was there interpreting.

Kenny teaches English phrases. Handy ones for everyday use like

He also asserts he’s a gentleman

He leaves the bar just after midnight with a bunch of presents, heading back to Canada for a bit:

5.14.2009 Kenny leaves for Canada

May 21: Non-Fix – Kota Ibushi, KUDO & Michael Nakazawa defeat HARASHIMATouru Owashi & Yukihiro Abe.

May 28: Ibushi goes to some kind of interview and drags Nakazawa along. He talks about the Phoenix Splash, and participating in New Japan’s upcoming Super Junior tournament.

May 29: Kenny wrestles an ROH show in Philadelphia versus Kenny King. Loads of cool pics from that whole show HERE. If you want to see fun baby versions of Seth Rollins, Austin Aries, Bryan Danielson, and loads of other wrestlers, those are in there too.

May 31: DDT Toyonaka Love Story 2 – Ibushi is in a six-man cluster with Michael Nakazawa and Toru Owashi versus Francesco Togo, PIZA Michinoku, Antonio Honda, Sasaki and Gabbana. More info and picture for this show can be found HERE

A phoenix bouquet sent to Ibushi for his NJPW match

Being the sort of dude he is, he also participates in the opening show for the NJPW Super Juniors tournament the same day, against Kanemoto. He loses, but had stated just prior to the match: “I became a professional wrestler to be a Super Junior.” Aw.
